The Musicals Meze
(Review by Wendy Keeling, Mercury 30th October 2009)
The title Musical Meze was an unfamiliar one, but apparently Meze is Greek/Turkish with its roots in antiquity.
It can mean a selection of quick and easy appetizers or a celebration of the new music and good times. This show lived up to its title, the large company giving their all as they performed songs from West End musicals.
The opening number One Short Day led up to Grandmas Song from Billy Elliot, Stella Green giving a polished rendition, followed by enthusiastic applause. Verses from Oliver needed no introduction as Im Reviewing The Situation and Oom Pah Pah, filled the auditorium. The chorus was in fine voice performing with wit and energy. Similarly, the big hits from Mamma Mia , Voulez Vouz and Does Your MotherKknow got feet tapping.
A Jersey Boys medley was followed by the spirited Latin style singing and dancing of Bambeleo from Zorro bringing Act 1 to a close.
James Droy and Glynne Hill mesmerised with their passionate duet The Point Of No Return from Phantom Of the Opera. In contrast, the Razzle Dazzle song and dance routine from Chicago gave the hoofers opportunity to strut their stuff.
The Circle Of Life from The Lion King captured the pulsating atmosphere of the African jungle, the company giving credit to this brilliantly evocative music.
Director and Choreographer David Adams took centre stage as he sang the powerful emotive I Am What I Am from La Cage Aux Folles, his giant figure dressed in drag, acknowledged by the responsive audience.
The cast, dressed in red, sparkled as Angie Frost and chorus belted out I Will Survive from Priscilla, followed by energetic dancing in the aisles, bringing the evening to a resounding conclusion.
It was good to see several new faces in the ranks, as well as to note opportunities for members of the chorus to take solo parts in this exuberant, colourful show.
